MiCare's Anniversary Day! And why we celebrate with tulips
On October 1 we celebrate MiCare's Anniversary
Learn more about MiCare's history and why we celebrate with tulips...
Today is MiCare's Anniversary.
DutchCare Ltd was formed on 1 October 1996 by an amalgamation with Avondrust Incorporated, (1974), Dutch Australian Community Action Incorporated (1984) and the Holland Australian Retirement Foundation Incorporation (1971). This resulted in a comprehensive range of both residential and community based aged care services for older frail and younger disabled with a focus on Dutch speaking people.
Although the tulip was in the DutchCare logo it wasn't until 2006 that Els and Nick Bakker from TNB Tulips started gifting us tulips. This gesture commenced with the Big Bang Concert on 6 October 2002 when we celebrated our first 6 years and the start of our commitment to the Eden Alternative.
We approached the tulip growers in the Dandenong Ranges to donate tulips so that we could make a giant logo for the stage. since then TNB Tulips has given us tulips each year for our anniversary. And why celebrate? Here are excerpts from Petra'sand the then President Ype de Bruin:
Where does one big bang come into this celebration? The big bang is what scientists now say created the world — ! And the next thing after the big bang was the Garden of Eden. So we are creating a new world for DutchCare today.
I am going to wave the magic wand and say Alla Kazamma Ramma Kazzoo and from this moment on, life will never be the same for any of you. Your eyes will be opened to the importance of relationships and I hope that you too will find ways to make lives of those around you that little bit better.
Today is our official move to making life better for the Elders and better for ourselves. You are coming with us aren't you? Dr. Thomas says, "With courage, all is possible. Without courage, you hurt a lot of people."
Well we have courage — we are Dutch aren't we! — Petra
This is the story of an amazing community who worked hard together before receiving any government funding and continue to do so today with some $6 million dollars of government support. Together we have achieved $21 million in assets and an annual turnover of $7.5 million. But the dollars are not so important; rather it is the difference that we can make in each other's lives — Ype
Just to complete the picture — in 2016 we changed our name to MiCare to reflect our focus on all migrant groups, not just the Dutch. MiCare = Migrant Care and on 1 July 2016 we merged with the New Hope Foundation to start our work with new and emerging ethnic communities.
MiCare and the Netherlands Retirement Village Association Queensland (NRVAQ) merged on 1 July 2017. This follows a long association between the two organisations for over 10 years.
In 2018 we merged with the Dutch Australian Community Centre in Sunshine.
With these mergers some things remain constant, that, the importance of relationships, making the lives of those around us good as we can, maintaining the community spirit that keeps us going and finally, making a difference in each other's lives. This is especially true in these COVID times that are testing us in many ways.
