Marianne, our Lifestyle Coordinator at Margriet Manor in Kilsyth, put together a fun, hands-on cooking session with our Elders.
Our Elders worked in pairs to put together an early afternoon feast of savoury zucchini muffins and vanilla sponge cupcakes. The zucchini was grown especially by one of our Elders, Harold, from our backyard vegetable garden right here at Margriet Manor.
Our Elders worked in pairs to help each other to mix ingredients and ladle the batter into moulds in the trays.
Our Elders, Nel and Rina (above), worked on the vanilla sponge batter together. Nel found that she had to be extra careful when ladling the spoonfuls of batter into the small paper cupcake cases.
Marianne then placed the zucchini muffins and vanilla sponge cupcakes into the oven to bake for half an hour. Within fifteen minutes the aromas from the oven had already flooded the room. The muffins turned out absolutely delicious! Butter and the bits of bacon added that extra bit of flavour.
As the Elders and some of our staff munched on the zucchini muffins and vanilla cupcakes Marianne shared her cooking stories with the Elders and the staff. She recalled the times her mum taught her traditional family Dutch recipes including a vegetable soup which she makes in batches and freezes. One of our Elders, Nel, recalled that one of her favourite things to bake was an apple crumble.
The evening was a fun, interactive and delicious activity! Thank you Marianne for putting together such a tasty adventure for our Elders at Margriet Manor to enjoy!
