Caregiver Stories
Tracey’s Story
Connected with seniors from a young age
For as long as she can remember, Michelle has had a special connection with elderly people. “When I was young, my grandmother used to take me to her community art gallery where I met all her friends. I’ve always had a precious place in my heart for older people which I feel might have developed because of the warm and encouraging atmosphere in those painting classes.”
After many years as an office worker in HR, Michelle wanted to do something more meaningful and discovered Aged Care. Since joining the Home Care team at MiCare she says “I’ve met some wonderful people and haven’t looked back.”
Annette’s Story
Passionate about building meaningful and enduring relationships
With a background in nursing, Annette has been in the caring industry for her entire life. When we asked her why she chose to work in Aged Care, she highlighted an important difference between this kind of work.
“When I first studied nursing, I did a few weeks of placement at a residential home. As I’d planned, I ended up going into the acute setting for a number of years – and loved it. But after a while, I missed those long-lasting relationships with people, so I returned to Aged Care and I’m very glad I did.”
Sui’s Story
Loves to help others enjoy their home
Sui has had a lot of positive feedback from the families she visits, and it’s not hard to understand why.
“I think it is important to be proud of your house. When my parents got older and frailer I helped them with the housework and saw how it would make them so happy. It does make you feel better even in a small way. So I decided this could be something I could do for other people. I also do meal preparation and transport to appointments and social groups. The clients are always very grateful for my visits and it feels nice to help them.”
Kwame’s Story
Discovered Aged Care through the power of community connections
When Kwame first moved to Australia, Aged Care wasn’t part of his original plan, but a chance conversation led him to a career he loves.
“When I came to Melbourne I joined a migrant group to meet people in my situation. One day two people talked about their jobs in Aged Care, and they looked very happy. I have to admit I wouldn’t have thought about this as a job in the beginning, but then I realised this sounds very rewarding so I decided to do the studies and try this myself. I think now this is the best job in the world. I always look forward to my shifts because it is good to make life better for people and help the community.”
Shweta’s Story
Enjoys making life easier for others
Shweta loves making a positive impact on people’s lives, and doesn’t underestimate the value of Home Care.
“Even when people cannot do as much for themselves anymore, they can stay home where it is more comfortable for them, and receive as much help as they need from the Aged Care workers. We help the clients by looking after their home the way they prefer it to be done, and make the meals they enjoy. When we speak the same language as the client it is much easier for them to communicate what they want.”
