What does a headpiece like a beanie have in common with laughter? Both things can make a person feel warm.
At MiCare’s newly established Chinese Social Support Group in Wantirna South, this is exactly what we do! At a recent gathering our staff provided beanies to participants to help them stay warm during the colder months.
Here in our social groups we also provide a setting in which like-minded seniors can mingle, connect with one another, and most importantly, share a laugh together.
In early August, our friends at Good360 Australia donated knitted beanies to MiCare and we handed these out to each participant in our new Chinese Social Support Group. We were told by delighted participants that they felt instantly connected with fellow participants through the simple act of wearing matching knitted beanies. Participants who have now become friends, are part of the ever-growing MiCare family.
MiCare established this Chinese specific social support group in response to the increasing demand for social support services for Chinese migrants in communities living in the Eastern region of Melbourne.
Participants are able meet with people from the similar cultural backgrounds and speak with them in the same language. Our staff speak their language and adopt a person-centred approach whilst encouraging them to share their stories. We understand that each individual’s life experience is different from the next person and we support their sense of self by understanding the significance of their past, present-day experience and aspirations for the future.
