On behalf of the board and management at MiCare, I apologise to the late Mrs Bertha Aalberts and her family for our failure to deliver the care that Mrs Aalberts required.
The most important thing for the board and management of MiCare is to deliver the high standards of care that our residents and their families deserve, and the community and regulators rightly expect.
Unfortunately, at our Avondrust Lodge home, where Mrs Aalberts lived in 2018, we did not consistently deliver on this commitment.
As the leader of the organisation, then and now, I must take ultimate responsibility for this failure.
I have done so by ensuring that we have done all within our power to make changes, not just at Avondrust Lodge, but at all of our homes. We have increased staffing, including Registered Nursing hours; we have improved training for staff and managers in critical areas; and we have implemented new quality assurance systems and processes.
I acknowledge how difficult this Royal Commission process must be for Mrs Aalberts’ family and friends. MiCare is committed to implementing any recommendation that may come out of the commission that will further improve the quality of care we provide for our Elders.
